The 3 Details of Interlocking Projects That Many Homeowners Overlook

Installing an interlocking project is doable for most homeowners that don't mind getting their hands dirty. It's a great option because its low maintenance, stylish, and not overly difficult. It can however - depending on the size - be a significant time investment. But when done with care, it can provide years and years of enjoyment.

When Corners Are Cut...

Then, bring on the repairs! Say goodbye to your low maintenance surface, and hello to a time-demanding patio that keeps popping bricks out & causing trips. There are three important components of a DIY interlock job that can bring professional-looking, long lasting results:

  1. Interlock edging/restraints/restraints
  2. Polymeric sand
  3. Sealer

Don't try to save time or money by forgoing any of these components. What might save you a fraction of your budget will be spent on later repairs. Eliminating a few hours of your time upfront by cutting corners will lead to an ongoing time investment dedicated to repairs.

Do I really need interlock restraints?

Yes you do.

Interlock restraints are critical to keeping your patio or walkway right where you want it. It eliminates spread that can happen over time, and keeps joints tight. This also means less of a chance any plant life will grow between the cracks (and less time you'll have to spend spraying of pulling them).

Why is polymeric sand necessary? Can't I use regular sand? Or nothing?

If you've ever had a home, or seen one, that has an old interlocking project, you might be skeptical of polymeric sand. The old version of the joint sand (from 20 years ago) used to turn to mush over time. Luckily, newer technology has polymeric sand providing problem-free results for homeowners.

There are 3 main benefits of using polymeric sand over regular sand (or nothing at all):

  1. Soil will never get into the cracks of your brick, meaning no weeds will be able to grow
  2. It is cement based and strong. This allows you to pressure wash your surface without losing the joint sand
  3. It contains bonding agents that form a solid joint between bricks, further preventing any spreading or drift

Why do I need a sealer? Isn't brick resilient?

Your interlocking will withstand huge amounts of abuse: being under the hot sun for hours a day, tolerating extreme hot and extreme cold, being covered in ice and snow, highly trafficked and even scratched by outdoor furniture.

A quick coat of sealer once installed will preserve the fresh, new look for a long time. It will also make it easier to remove any stains, and to clean your surface if necessary. This small time investment – just roll it on, and let dry- might be what saves you from feeling like you need to completely replace the work in a few years.
